SAT EXAM

The SAT exam is a multiple choice paper-based standardized exam administrated by College Board. The goal of the SAT is to evaluate if the candidate is ready for college. For universities, the SAT provides a system to compare different candidates with an identical measurement standard.

¿WHAT IS THE SAT EXAM?

SAT BASIC INFORMATION

  • SAT exam purpose: evaluate the linguistics and math skills of a candidate.
  • Required score: your SAT score requirements depend on the institution you want to apply to.
  • SAT score expiration: technically, your score never expires. However, different schools have their own rules about accepting old SAT scores.
  • SAT Score Reports: even if you take several exams you will always decide what score you get to send to the universities you apply to.

What are the different SAT exams available?

  • SAT: the standard exam version used to apply to college.
  • PSAT/NMSQT: the PSAT/NMSQT includes reading, math and writing and language sectionsThe score of  he PSAT/NMSQT can be used to pick candidates for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
  • PSAT 10: it has the same structure as the SAT; therefore includes reading, math and writing and language sections.
  • PSAT 8/9: it has the same structure as the SAT, therefore includes reading, math and writing and language sections.

 

What are the SAT exam dates?

  • Calendar: College Board doesn’t provide a year calendar for the SAT. However, year after year the pattern is very similar. Check the link for 2022 SAT exam dates
  • SAT exam registration: to register, you have to go through the college board website. Depending on the city you are living in register as soon as you can since the slots available are limited.
  • SAT scores available: College Board discloses the date in which the vast majority of students will have access to their score. The estimated time to access their score is 13 days and 10 more days for universities to receive them.

SAT EXAM STRUCTURE

The SAT exam is divided into 2 sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math

EVIDENCE-BASED READING AND WRITING SECTION

  • Objective: Test the linguistic capabilities of the candidate. 
  • Score: 200 – 800 points.
  • Parts: Contains 2 tests
    • Reading test
    • Writing and Language test
  • Number of Questions:
    • Reading test: 52 questions
    • Writing and Language test: 44 questions
  • Time:
    • Reading test: 65 minutes
    • Writing and Language test: 35 minutes
  • Additional Info:
    • Reading test:
      • Contains 5 reading passages with corresponding multiple choice questions 
      • Passage Length: 500 – 700 words
      • Time for each question: 1.25 minutes per question
    • Writing and Language test: 
      • Contains 4 passages that contain 11 multiple choice questions per passage. 
      • Length of Passages: 400 – 450 words
      • Time for each question: 47 seconds per question

MATH SECTION

 

  • Objective: Test the mathematical capabilties of the candidate.
  • Score: 200 – 800 puntos.
  • Parts: 1 test divided into 2 parts
    • No-calculator portion

  • Number of questions: 58 questions
    • No-calculator portion: 20 questions
      • Multiple Choice: 15 questions
      • Grid-in:  5 questions
    • Calculator portion: 38 questions

  • Time: 80 minutos
    • No-calculator portion: 25 minutes
    • Calculator portion: 55 minutes
    • Time for each question: 1 minute y 22 seconds per question
