GRE Verbal - 164

“Without a doubt, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND EPIC Barcelona!! This is my second experience with EPIC and working with Jackie and I WAS SUCCESSFUL BOTH TIMES. I wanted to take the GRE to increase my chances of getting a scholarship and I knew I needed a teacher. Having previously worked with Jackie for the TOEFL (and scoring 118/120), I knew she would help me achieve my goal.

In my opinion, this kind of exams not only test your knowledge but also how you prepare specifically for the exam so it is very very important to work with someone who has experience with previous students and who is familiar with the test questions. This is why studying EPIC is so useful: by the end of our preparation, I felt I knew exactly what the test makers tried to test in every question. Moreover, we detected my weakness -which was English vocabulary and reasoning comprehension- and she provided me with tons of materials and the hardest (which is essential if you want score high). Finally, I was able to score 164 verbal and 166 math!! Without EPIC I certainly wouldn’t have been able to achieve such a high score.

Finally, it is very very important to know how to self-motivate because these exams can be overwhelming and it is very easy to get pessimistic… in this way, Jackie helped me a lot with her constant encouragement and optimism. So, overall, if you are thinking to get a teacher for the TOEFL or the GRE, do not hesitate! If you want to get a high score, you definitely need EPIC. Thank you so much Jackie and EPIC for all your help!!”

TOEFL - 118/120

“I started doing SAT prep classes with the Exam Prep Center in the summer before my last year of school (senior year). EPC helped me raise my score from an 1800 to a 2070 and get a perfect score in reading (800/800). This is an incredible feat and thanks to my score, I was able to gain entry with a scholarship to the University of Miami, which is ranked very high in the United States. I also got into University of California San Diego (ranked number 26 in the US) and other schools. This is no small feat and I was able to do this thanks to my very high score in the SAT.”

SAT - 800/800 Critical Reading

¡Muchas gracias!”

You are allowed to take notes on all 4 sections of the TOEFL exam. If you take the exam at a test center, you will be provided with 3 sheets of scratch paper and pencils.

TOEFL ibt Reading section

On the TOEFL Reading section you will have 3 or 4 passages, depending on exam day. If you have four reading passages, one will be an experimental passage; however, you never know which one of the four is the experimental passage.

If you had 3 TOEFL reading passages you will have 54 minutes to answer 30 questions. If you have 4 TOEFL reading passages you will have 72 minutes to answer 40 questions. This means that you have an average of 1 minute and 48 seconds to answer each question. Keep this in mind while you are preparing.

The TOEFL reading passages are excerpts from textbooks and can be on a wide variety of subjects such as biology, mathematics, chemistry, and other many other university related subjects. Each reading passage is usually about 700-800 words in length.

You will have 54 or 72 minutes to do the COMPLETE reading section. Therefore, it is important that you manage your time so that you finish the TOEFL reading section within the time constraint.

To practice the TOEFL reading and learn about the different reading questions types click here and practice some of our TOEFL reading questions.

TOEFL Listening

Just like the reading section of the TOEFL test, the listening section also varies in the number of questions that you will have. On the listening section of the TOEFL exam you will listen to 5 to 7 classroom lectures. If you have 5 classroom lectures, you will have 41 minutes to answer 28 questions. If you have 7 classroom lectures, you will have 57 minutes to answer 39 questions. This means that you will have one minute and 27 seconds to answer each question.

For each lecture that you listen to it can vary in three to five minutes in length, followed by five to six questions. You only listen to each audio only one time, so be sure to be attentive and take good notes!

You can take notes while you are listening to the lectures and you do not see the questions until after you have listened to one of the lectures.

TOEFL Break

After you complete the reading and listening sections, you will be given a 10-minute break. It is a good idea that you get up and stretch during the break. This will give you extra energy and allow you to go to the last two sections of the TOEFL exam (Speaking and Writing).

TOEFL Speaking

For the TOEFL speaking section you will have 4 different speaking tasks to do. Each task is different. The entire speaking section takes 17 minutes to complete. It is unique to other English exams in that you speak into a microphone and your responses are recorded.

TOEFL writing

The TOEFL writing section is the final section on the TOEFL exam. It consists of 2 different tasks. For the first writing, you will have to read an academic passage for 3 minutes and then listen to a classroom lecture related to the topic you just read about. You then will have 20 minutes to type your essay. The writing should have at least 150 words. However, at Total Test Time we highly recommend that you write 225 words or more to obtain a high TOEFL score.

You should type at least 300 words. However, at EPIC Barcelona we do recommend that you aim for 400 words or higher.
